Thanksgiving

Hi everbody!

In our last English lesson we were watching a short video clip called "The Story of Thanksgiving".

I am going to summarize it for you:

In 1620 Great Britains (also called Pilgrim Fathers) crossed the Atlantic Ocean by a sailing ship and arrived at the east coast of America.

They arrived in winter and firstly they tried to build a village of wooden houses. But it was very cold and they could not find any food so it was pretty hard for them to survive.

But then spring came and everything got better. They wanted to grow something and so they decided to dig a hole. But the Pilgrim Fathers were not experienced farmers and so they were not successful.
After a while they met Indians. The Indians helped them to grow and harvest potatoes, corn and so on.

So the Pilgrims invited the Indians for a great meal. They thanked god for all they had and decided to celebrate this "party" every year.

Nowadays families and friends get together and cook great dishes which inlcudes a turkey, pumpkins and potatoes.

Clichés and Prejudices about Americans

Hi everybody!

I was reading an article the other day in the magazine "Spotlight"and it talks about clichés and prejudices of America.

I thought you might be interested because it is very amazing what Europeans think about people from the USA.

Basically what it says is that there are a lot of clichés Europeans have about Americans.

For instance:

  • everything is bigger in the USA, shopping malls, glasses of Coca Cola, ice cream
  • Americans have no cultur
  • American men wear long shorts to the beach
  • businesswoman wear sneakers and white tights

It also says that Americans have clichès and prejudices about Europeans.

For instance:

  • French people are arrogant

What do you think about prejudices and clichés?
Let me know, and write a comment

Scottish independece referendum

Hi everyone!

Scotland voted!

I was reading an article the other day in the online edition of the "OÖ Nachrichten" and it talks about the Scottish independence referendum.

I thought you might be interested because it is an actual topic which concerns the whole United Kingdom. Besides there are many other regions which want to become an independent country, for example Catalonia and the Basque region.

What surprised me most was that Scotland voted against independence.
It's very interesting what will happen now in Scotland because many people voted for independence and are now certainly disappointed.

If I were Scottish, I would have voted for independence. Scotland would have its own laws, its own president, its own parliament and the taxes would also stay in its country.

What do you think about their decision?

Dress codes & Fashion Competition

Hi everybody!

I have heard a lot about dress codes and fashion competition recently and I would like to give you my opinion on that.

There are a lot of different types of dress codes. For example casual wear, streetwear, sport clothes, business clothes and school uniforms.

Here is my opinion about school uniforms:
In my opinion dress codes should be very strict. I think it's not ok if people wear jogging trousers, headscarfs or dog collars in school.
In my school we don't have a school uniform and I am really happy about it. Of course there are some advantages for school uniforms. For example they reduce stress in school and they help students to save money.
But dress codes help stop students spending too much on fashion and they ban an important means of expressing yourself. Besides you cannot show you personality and I think that it is not good if everybody look equal.

In my school there is no fashion competition. It means that the people who don't wear the latest fashion or the most expensive clothes are not bullying.

What is your opinion?

My most visited supermarket!

Hi everybody ;)

In our last English lesson we wre talking about our local supermarkets and today I will describe my favourite supermarket.
The supermarket is placed in Schwertberg and is a chainstore of Billa. My mum mostly does the shopping in Schwertberg because it is very close to our house and Billa's employees are very friendly and helpful.
In front of the supermarket there are a lot of trolleys but also baskets. When you enter the store first there is the fruit and vegetable section. The fruits always look very fresh and natural. Then there is the bakery and the deli section. In the middle of the supermarket you find the sweets, bread, polishing and the drinks. At the end there are the frozen foods in a very big fridge. At the cash desk you can find newspeapers, flowers, chewing gums and sweets.
